Discover F.A.S.T. Wageningen’s Purpose and Aspirations

Here, we share the core principles and goals that guide F.A.S.T. Wageningen, highlighting our commitment to fostering student athleticism and community spirit.

Our goals

The aim of F.A.S.T. is to collectivise a sport that is traditionally practiced in a highly individual manner. By bringing student triathletes together within an organised association, F.A.S.T. lowers the threshold for participation and regular training. Joint training sessions, shared knowledge, and mutual support enable students of varying experience levels to train more effectively and safely than they would individually. Particular attention is given to responsible and safe training practices, including clear guidelines for open-water swimming and cycling, supervision during sessions, and awareness of injury prevention.

F.A.S.T. supports sustained engagement in triathlon by providing continuity, structure, and a supportive social environment. Members benefit from training and progressing together rather than in isolation, which strengthens motivation and long-term commitment. This social component is particularly valuable for students who would otherwise train largely alone and aligns well with Thymos’ objective of promoting inclusive and socially connected student sports initiatives. By promoting regular physical activity alongside social connection, F.A.S.T. also contributes to student wellbeing and mental health, supporting a healthy balance between academic demands and physical activity.

To achieve this, F.A.S.T. organises weekly training sessions, periodic social activities, and, in the longer term, participation in competitions. Through shared training and activities, members learn from one another by exchanging experience and knowledge across the three triathlon disciplines. While F.A.S.T. welcomes all students regardless of experience, the association also supports members interested in pursuing competitive triathlon, providing guidance and training opportunities to develop performance safely and effectively. In addition, F.A.S.T. aims to create financial advantages for its members by facilitating group participation in events, sharing equipment and resources, and, where possible, arranging reduced fees or collective purchases, thereby lowering financial barriers to participation.

The long-term vision of F.A.S.T. is to develop into a stable and well-organised student sports association that contributes actively to the Wageningen sports community. The association is committed to transparent governance and continuity through clear role division, documentation, and knowledge transfer between successive boards. With increasing interest in endurance sports among students, F.A.S.T. has the potential to grow in membership while maintaining a strong focus on accessibility, safety, and organisational quality.
